Taiwan-Malaysia Medical Exchange Advancing Cross Border Medical Cooperation

The International Conference on Integrated Cancer Treatment was recently held on the 21 September 2019 at Bayview Hotel Georgetown Penang. The event based on "One Country, One Center" plan under Taiwan's New Southbound Policy was organised by Taiwan's largest medical center, the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and co-organised by TAITRA in corporation with Penang's medical institutions  Island Hospital and Lam Wah Ee Hospital.

The event which was attended by more than hundred people, saw participants consisting of medical professionals, academics, business owners, Taiwanese alumni as well as member of the public. The event created a golden opportunity for many as it provided with insights and info on how Malaysian patients will benefit from the the advanced technology - Proton therapy, Immuno-chemotherapy, Surgery and Cancer Care. There was also a detailed discussion on lung, brain and liver cancer as well as inspirational experience shared by a few Malaysians.

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital with its 7 branches located in Linkou, Taipei, Taoyuan, Keelung, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Kaohsiung offers the largest as well as the most comprehensive health care services in Taiwan. The Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has been working in building a good relationship ties between Taiwan and Malaysia. Among some of the efforts that has been taking place is such as the signing of  a memorandum of cooperation with many Malaysian hospitals at the beginning of this year. Apart from that, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has also provided with support in donating medical equipment and providing training for many Malaysian medical professionals.

Back in July this year, delegates from Penang's Parkway Pantai Medical Group were invited by Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to Taiwan for a study visit where they had the chance to understand the use of medical information systems.

Prof. Liu Hui Ping, Dept. of Cardiothoracic surgery, CGMH, Linkou led a team of ten
delegates to the conference where they shared their experiences and knowledge regarding
the treatment of three major areas, that is the lung, brain and liver cancer.

According to Prof. Lu Sheng Nan, the Vice Dean of Chiayi CGMH, the exchange received an
overwhelming support from Penang’s medical professionals, which greatly boosted his
confidence in deepening overseas collaborations with the Taiwanese medical professionals.
The meaningful interactions between the Taiwanese and Malaysian medical industry players
have set the stage for a greater degree of corporation for the future.

It was then followed by a session where a few people who has sought treatment in Taiwan, came up to share their experience. It was delightful news to hear of their progress of recovery.

One of the guest patients was Lim who travelled to Taiwan to treat his sinusitis and he
recounted how he lost only 5 cc of blood in the 20-minute procedure which resolved the
ailment that has been bothering him for decades. He added that the smell of fresh air upon
waking up from his procedure was truly amazing. Lim was totally satisfied with the whole
experience from the initial inquiry and discussion, to the actual procedure and recovery
process and gave the experience a perfect score.
