Deepavali Gala Dinner 2016 at Hotel Equatorial Penang

Deepavali mood is still in the air and Hotel Equatorial Penang has certainly made it even more merrier with the Deepavali Gala Dinner which was held on the 2 November 2016. It was a night of celebration with heavenly royal cuisine which was specially prepared by celebrity chef Mujeeb-ur Rehman and spectacular entertainment all night long.

I was indeed very fortunate to be invited to the event especially since this was the first time  the hotel has done such. I personally have been to a couple of their new year eve countdown celebration, which I personally loved it too.

The first thing that captures the attention of the diners will be the 'kolam' by the entrance. A beautiful piece of art. Simply amazing.

Diners were first welcomed to the pre-dinner cocktail where drinks and bites were served,

I had the chance to enter the ballroom first prior to the crowd entering it. And it was beautiful. One thing I loved about the setting was the different folds of the table napkins. Different tables has different folds, and it was truly fascinating as I walked around seeing all the different folds. Reminds me much of the hats which they give for new year's eve. There were different shapes too.

The doors were opened, guest were ushered into the ballroom and it wasn't long before the event kick off.

Just after the event started, the celebrity chef Mujeeb-ur Rehman was then welcomed on stage to say a few words. He shared a little about his experience and his gratitude to his friend whom he was grateful for.

Followed by the moment where everybody had been waiting for. The moment to dig into all those delicious and heavenly cuisines. Makan time!

There were 2 types of soups to choose from.

Yakhni Kaju Shorba - Lamb broth finished with mild spices & cashew
Subziyon Ka Nichor - Mixed vegetables soup

It was indeed nice to actually see this kind of metal plate being used. Well there's so much food, you will need all the compartments it has :)

Lucknowi Dum Pulao - Authentic Dum Pilaf of Awadh
Hyderabadi Subz Biryani - Mix Vegetable & Rice Delicacy of Hyderabad

The long grain rice had nice fragrant aroma which definitely went well with all the dishes on the buffet line.

Lebaabdar Paneer Tikka - Paneer Tikka Treated Gently with Hot spices

Murgh Sarson Peelimirch Tikka Chicken breast treated with ginger garlic & mustard

Lebaabdar Paneer Tikka - Paneer Tikka Treated Gently with Hot spices

Paneer Mumtaz Cottage cheese simmered with Cashew, tomato & reduced milk gravy

Mahi Rezaala Fish cooked with milk & cream gravy

Dal Bukhara Black pulse simmered with tomato, cream & butter

Each individual dish, had its own distinguished taste. Full of flavour and spice. The different spice used in the cooking gives every bite that nice wonderful taste and aroma. Though you may see that many items are curry based but they are fairly mild spice. No sweat was seen on my head so it was not spicy haha...

On the other side of the buffet spread was the roasted duck and roasted chicken which came with the sauce and condiments.

Fried Vietnamese Glass Noodles

While on the other side, where the cold cut and fresh garden salad were. Various types of condiments as well as dressing were available too.

What more can you ask for when you have great food, great performance and excellent singers. We were entertained with traditional Indian dance performances as well as singing from the in house band and all the way from East Malaysia, Sammy Ariff. Everyone was glued to their seats especially when it came to the lucky draw sessions.

In house band, Borderzone entertaining the diners.

Sammy Ariff serenading the crowd with his strong vocals. The crowd simply love his performance.

No better way to end the meal with such irresistible desserts. A mixture of western and Indian treats.

There was also a surprise contest. The best dressed award where the lady below was selected as the winner for the best dressed. That's one beautiful looking saree.

Lucky diners won themselves dining vouchers, room stay vouchers and people were were all excited when it came to the grand prize.

Congratulations to the lucky diner who won himself air ticket to New Delhi.

YB Danny Law, the DAP's Penang State EXCO for Tourism Development was invited up on stage to hand out certificates of appreciation.

It was indeed a night of vibrant celebration over an array of flavourful delicacies.
