Shaq Koyok "Culture Attack" Art Exhibition at G Hotel Gurney Penang

This is my first time attending an art exhibition and thanks to G Hotel Gurney Penang for inviting me over to see the amazing masterpieces by award-winning contemporary indigenous artist, Shaq Koyok. G Hotel Gurney is indeed honored as this is their second time hosting Shaq Koyok and his work of art using  acrylic, charcoal and mixed media oil. Back by popular demand, Shaq Koyok brings a set of new impressive works under the theme "Culture Attack", which illustrates the struggle of the indigenous Malaysian Orang Asli culture in a globalized post-modern 21st century.

Born is a village called Kampung Pulau Kempas in Banting, Selangor, Shaq's artistic energies are pure and passionate. His association with painting began at the young age of 5 year old using oil pastels. He used this growing talent to express his feelings about everything that resolves around him. His ability to capture emotions in portraiture through the subject's expression marked his entry as a known artist and brought him to numerous international exhibitions in UK, Australia, America and throughout Malaysia. His unique and powerful portrayal of the beauty and tensions that exist within the Orang Asli through the painting has made a positive impact socially and emotionally.

he has won numerous awards and honors including Indigenous People Excellence Award by Tourism Selangor 2015 and Indigenous People Icon Award 2015. He also had his first children's book published in 2013 with the title of Tujal and the Wind, written by Stephen-John Curtis.

Shaq Koyok received an Honours  Degree in Fine Arts at University Teknologi MARA. His artworks thereafter has been expression his growing concern about the world and the aboriginals in Malaysia. Shaq is also a featured speaker at many workshops and events including the Malaysia Indigenous Day 2013. He has also been featured in many newspapers, magazine articles and television programs such as Chanel NewsAsia.

The event started off with a warm welcome by Mr Michael Hanratty, General Manager for G Hotel.

Shaq Koyok then said a few words about his art work and the messages he tells through his work.

Guest were also given the honor to write down their message or anything they had in mind onto a big paper strip which Shaq Koyok then made it into an art.

I believe Shaq Koyok's artwork will certainly bring an impact especially the awareness that many of us may not be aware off. Hoping to see more of his artwork in near future.
